Many Different Uses Of A Spray Foam Insulation

By Timothy Patterson

Two most common materials such as the isocyanate and the polyol resin are being used in spray foams. The 2 materials will respond when they are being mixed together and it will enlarge thirty to sixty times it original liquid volume we spraying. The advantage of this is so useful when packaging materials and also, it forms the shape of object. Through this, there is high value in thermal insulating. So the higher the insulation value, there is more effectiveness in it.

One most common material which is used is the polyurethane. Polyurethane cells are consist of low conductivity of gas. Polyurethane now is utilized mostly in some industrial uses and applications such as for cushions and for shoe soles. Airplanes are also making use of this and as well buildings as an insulator. A spray foam insulation can be able to block the kinds of heat transfer. Three types are the radiant, conductive, and the convective heat transfers.

The thermoset plastics will block the conductive heat transfer because it has a very loose bond of molecules. And also, the cells of spray may be filled with either open or close air cell foam. A thermoset foam has the capability to reflect a radiant heat because of reflective surfaces of the cell formation of foams. A spray also has the capability to air seal and one benefit of this air sealing is blocking convective heat transfer in both interior and exterior parts.

There are many applications of these and two most common are for packaging and building applications. It can be considered as a specialized package material especially for packing fragile items. These are used for protecting valuables such as vases, sculptures, computers, chandeliers, furniture, and some other things. And because of its expansion from 30 to 60 times, it can protect things in any size, weight, or form.

In buildings, this insulation is used as a replacement for fiber glasses. Using fiber glasses is used traditionally when insulating a building. The mixture of two main components, the isocyanate and polyol resin, is sprayed to roof tiles, concrete slabs, holes, and wall cavities. Polyisocyanurate and polyurethane are two types that are being used for the buildings to provide thermal insulation and to minimize air infiltration.

Polyurethane spray is divided into two. These are medium density close cell and light density open cell. Each division have thermoset cellular plastics which also have small cells in millions.

The light density open cell is also known as a half pound foam. This is a semi firm material and its structure is like a sponge which will enlarge when installed. This also creates small and open cells that contain carbon dioxide. Because of its capability to enlarge, it can fill cracks, voids, and crevices. These are often used in inner walls because it can provide a sound reduction through blocking or absorbing the leakage of air.

Medium density close cell or also called as the two pound foam is also a stiff material. It consists of a thermal resistance which is long term. Typically, the color is yellow. In Richardson, TX, some types requires a unique identification color.

Other countries are using these to be applied under roof tiles in high pressure. The tiles are then being sealed. These are used not only for severe leaks but for enormous heat insulation as well.
