Preparing For Your Kayak Harpeth River Trip

By Brian Price

Many would say that the great outdoor experience cannot be made complete without some sort of kayak or canoe element, just as the early explorers experienced in the past. The canoe and kayak not only led to discoveries, but in connecting people as well with each other and with nature. Most of the untouched wilderness areas can only be accessed by kayak. Thus if you are thinking of a kayak Harpeth river trip then you should finish this article.

You should prepare a checklist, but one that does not only show what things to bring. It should also show you what things to do so that you can be both mentally and emotionally prepared for it. A good checklist is like a good friend that will advise you on the best course of action and will assist you in making an informed decision.

The initial thing on your list will be where to go. Of course you have already chosen the Harpeth River of Tennessee to enjoy yourself. It is one of the main tributaries for the Ohio and Cumberland, and these two rivers make up the Mississippi watershed. The next thing to do is of course to get as much info ton the river you chose as well.

Identify the locations of where the whitewater areas on the Harpeth are. A majority will be located in the Little Harpeth, a tributary of this waterway. Always stay away from these whitewater areas and only tackle them if you are already an experienced kayaker. Do not just go to these places just for the heck of it, as it can be dangerous.

In general the main river will be meandering but have smooth sailing. If you do not know what meandering means, it basically means that the river will take many twists and turns and so the currents will change depending on the curvature of the river path. It is advantageous to ask from seasoned guides in the area where the strong currents exist along these curves.

Getting a good guide cannot be overstated enough. A good and experienced guide will cost you a bi more, but then you must always put a premium on safety. A good guide will have a good safety track record. When you find a guide, do interview as much as you can to ensure that you will enjoy and be safe on your trip. Remember that a safe trip will mean that it will be a more enjoyable one for you.

Remember to gear up properly by asking experienced kayakers what to buy. If you are a first time it is very easy to go overboard and spend a lot, so do shop prudently. An advantage is that you can always buy everything online nowadays so you do not have to do a lot of running around. Always be prudent in spending your money.

And before you do go, sit down with your group and have a long discussion on what you hope to accomplish, do or enjoy. Discuss also how long you want the trip to be, the shorter the better, for these kind of trips can be exhausting. A two to three day trip should suffice for you.
