By Gregory Foster

Being exposed to trauma, whether it is as a child or an adult is one of the worst things that can happen to a person. It doesn't matter the severity of this because it is something that belongs to the individual and they have to deal with it. People can compare this to another story, and neglect it, but there are always other things to have to deal with. This is why one has to learn how to heal from trauma.

When a person does not deal with their emotions and their feelings, they won't be able to live a lifestyle. They won't lead relationships which are healthy. It is not easy to have personal relationships when you have been through an abusive relationship of your own. You will find that you have difficulty with intimacy, which is obviously necessary when you are in a personal relationship.

You begin to heal from this as soon as you begin to talk about it. When you begin to express yourself, you will start to feel more about various emotions. The goals is to be able to feel versus this numb state of mind. This is how therapy can help you. It is obviously a long process, depending on the type of trauma and when it happened.

Flashbacks can seem so real. They are similar to a video clip. When someone experiences them for the first time, they may feel as if you are back in that place. As more memories come to the surface, one will experience other symptoms, such as panic attacks and anxiety. Nightmares are common.

As the individual progresses with this, they will develop other disorders. Often, they become disconnect from everyone else. Dissociative disorders are common. They feel as if they are in a world of their own. They may feel as if they are watching everyone and everything from the outside, such as in a movie.

Support groups are great for people who have been in one on one therapy for some time. It can help them to connect with others who have been in the same sort of situation. They will begin to connect with other people and build relationships. They will exchange stories and often build friendships.

However, therapy can help all cases, whether it is long terms or whether someone has simply witnessed a robbery. There is a lot that goes through one's mind when an individual has seen a murder or an accident. Therapy is a slow process. But one has to be patient. People who have been through abusive situations, for example, will have trust issues.

Patients will also experience a range of feelings, such as experiencing waves of emotions. Some people will have feelings every so often, but will prefer to block them out, until they are hit with them again. Others, will experience these feelings in the form of a rollercoaster. This is something that will work on alongside the therapist. There may be various reasons why they act in this way. The therapist will work on different methods in order to help them talk, and therefore progress and heal from what they are going through.
