Useful Information Regarding Gator Hunts

By Martha Long

One hot topic in states like South Carolina, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Arkansas is alligators. Individuals in these states live among alligators like it is normal. This is because the number of these animals is high. They normally swim in local water bodies and there are times when they get themselves into private spaces like swimming pools and door steps. Also, there are people who have had awful encounters with alligators. This is worth knowing about Gator hunts.

Actually, the alligator population is has grown recently to a dangerous level which needs controlling. This is the reason why the law currently allows controlled hunting of these animals. There existed a period where there was no regulation on gator hunting so they were hunted almost to extinction. There was intervention by the government where they banned hunting so as to increase gator populations.

During the period of the ban, gators made their comeback and they became a major problem again. Given that they are apex predators in their habitat, their population is not threatened by other animals. Therefore, they are able to rise in population beyond control. When this became a problem, the government decided to legalize gator hunting, but only in for a limited period every year.

Gator hunting is a practice that state governments regulate. This implies that states are in charge of giving licenses and regulating the way the practice is done within their boundaries. The open season on gators in many states begins in August and comes to an end in November. Residents are given around 2 months of hunting.

A hunter must be licensed so as to hunt within their state. One cannot transfer licenses and this implies that it is only the individual whose name appears on the license that can use it. Likewise, the license is invalid immediately one goes out of the state they got it from. The application must be made anew if one decides on moving to another place.

There is a fee that is involved in the application of a license. One must pay the fee in full before they are granted a license. Licenses are usually issued a month in advance before the open season begins. The license bears the name of the applicant and the state that issued it. One is required to have the license on their person at all times when they are hunting.

Usually, there is a variance in the number of permits given by every state. For example, Florida issues only 5000 permits annually. Each permit holder can only hunt two gators during the open season. It is illegal to exceed this number. An out of state applicant can also be issued with a license in a state that they do not reside in. However, these applicants normally pay more than what residents pay for the license.

Because many applicants are hoping to be licensed for hunting, they are distributed using random drawings. This method gets rid of bias. It is only possible to hunt on public land for those with permits. One should seek permission from an owner of a private land before hunting on private land.
