The Role Of Government In Irrigation Support

By Roger Russell

Food security is an issue that is faced by many countries that do not receive a lot of rainfall. The best way through which this issue can be addressed is by reclaiming lands and encouraging farmers to water their crops. Irrigation support from the government will be required. The following are some of the roles played by the state in such projects.

The extension officers play the role of training the farmers on how best to carry out their activities. With more knowledge, more yields are achieved as people stop making mistakes that might have been affecting the productivity of their lands. They are also taught on how to prevent and treat certain diseases that are associated with certain crops. Each extension officer is supposed to give a report on his achievements at the end of the season.

The kind of supplies used in production determine the results to expect at the end of a season. If poor quality supplies are used, the produce will not be the best, yet most people will avoid the high quality supplies due to their high retailing prices. The state can offer subsidies to ensure that everyone can afford the right supplies for his farm. More yields are made this way.

The yields ought to have a ready market for people to agree to be part of the project. Some of the produce are perishable, and if no market is sought, the farmers will count a lot of losses. The state should find a way to do away with selfish middlemen. Good roads have to be constructed too to enable the farmers to get their produce to the market in time.

Water is the main resource that will be needed in this kind of a project. It is up to the government to determine a good source and plan on how this resource will be channeled to the farms. For the sake of the sustainability of a scheme, the team should monitor how the water is distributed and used. This way, the resource is not wasted.

Technical stuffs are also needed for these projects to succeed. This includes engineers that ensure the layouts are done in an efficient manner and that the water is effectively channeled to the users. If the farmers will be using sprinklers and other machines, they will need professionals to help in the installation and repairs. This helps in ensuring that productive time is not wasted looking for help when there is a system failure.

The extension officers and other officials involved in the project are expected to make a follow up on the activities of the farmers. One successful harvest does not mean that the project has fully met all the set objectives. There is need to find out if there are tips that can be applied to make things even better. Any challenges reported should also be noted down and proper advice given.

Research facilities are also part of these projects. For everything to run smoothly and the best results to be achieved, the right methods, seedlings, and types of crops must be grown. This is decided by experts after they have conducted enough research concerning the soil, climate, and resources available in the area. The government hence provides enough resources for quality research to be conducted.
