Preventing Food Allergies In Children Is Possible

By Carl Ellis

As with anything in modern medicine, it is hard to know what is right and what is wrong when it comes to the advice that one hears. Since our understanding of how our bodies develop an allergy is growing all the time, new discoveries may often contradict the previous misconception. It is best to stay up to date on all the current research to know the best ways of preventing food allergies in children.

Some people may think that an allergy is just something that causes mild irritation and slightly limits a person's diet, but those who live with a problem like this know that it can be much more serious than that. When it is an infant or even a toddler who is experiencing the intense symptoms of anaphylactic shock or breathing difficulty, they can easily threaten a baby's life. Less severe symptoms can come in the form of dry, itchy skin that forms small bumps, called eczema.

The biggest misconception that has been disproven in recent years is the diet advisory for pregnant women. It was common knowledge among those who were expecting for quite a while that eating foods that were known as allergenic, such as bread, milk, fish, eggs, and nuts should be avoided. However, now researchers believe the opposite is true, which might explain in part the recent uptick in allergy problems.

Any woman who has been an expecting mother knows that complications during pregnancy are just awful. These must be avoided at all costs to give the baby the best chance of growing up to be healthy, and so dietary discretion must be observed, particularly if the mother is allergic to certain foods. While eating allergenic foods can help reduce the baby's risk, the mother cannot risk her own health, which can in turn risk the baby's.

Just as certain things are good for adults, they are also necessary for a fetus to have for it to develop properly. Many allergenic foods have important nutrients such as omega 3 fatty acid, which is good for the growing brain, and folate, which prevents brain problems. These are found in fish and peanuts respectively.

The essential vitamins and nutrients that are in foods that are highly allergenic are important for any growing child, but they are also important for adults as well. This fact is even more true for the expecting mother. As long as she is not allergic, these foods are important for a healthy pregnancy.

When formula is avoided and breastfeeding is done exclusively for four months or more, there is evidence to support the belief that this can help prevent problems. There are some cases where formula is the only option. It is best to follow the advice of a pediatrician.

When it is time to introduce foods to the little one, it is a good idea to pay attention to allergic reactions. Exposing the child to allergenic foods can help prevent future problems according to new research. However, watch out for the signs of an allergy and avoid those foods in the future.
