By Mark Hughes

Across numerous cultures all over the world, there are several developments that advanced independently such as canoes. Even though different cultures created their own canoes with certain uniqueness, these vessels tended to resemble a lot. An example is that most of them have pointed edges and are lightweight slender watercrafts. Traditional canoes were basically dugouts implying that they contained a bark connected on a frame made of wood. Here are facts regarding Nashville Canoe.

Some cultures developed canoes that were meant for use with sails while others were used together with outriggers. Some of these features are retained in modern designs with some modifications. Also, the construction materials have changed to reflect modern times although some people still prefer using the basic old materials. Another sector that has changed a lot is the means of propulsion.

Typical traditional canoes depend on human power as a means of propulsion but some are currently designed with electric motors for propulsion. Powered canoes take away the tedious effort of paddling or rowing the vessel. Paddlers of these watercrafts usually use single-bladed paddles. Canoes are designed with special seats and one can operate paddle them while seated or kneeling.

Passengers can sit opposite each other but the individual paddling the watercraft must face the path of travel. It is not a must for the passengers to face the direction of travel. The intended use of the vessel dictates aspects such as shape of hull, length, and materials of construction. Nevertheless, most modern mass produced canoes are built using materials such as molded plastic and fiberglass.

Once in America, canoes were a very vital transport mechanism. This was especially for exploration and trade. The use of these vessels may have changed in the US, but in other parts of the world, they are still used for transport. Some are fitted with outboard motors. Therefore, they are mostly meant for touring and camping. Their cargo spaces are bigger. Also, in ensuring their role is played well, they are made with greater stability.

These vessels are also used for competitive water sports such as flat-water racing, wild-water canoeing, slalom, and marathon. In flat-water racing one is required to kneel on one knee while paddling. The vessel used does not have a rudder and has to be steered using a j-stroke. For C1 sprints the boat must have a minimum length of 280 centimeters and can be partly covered or fully open. They are usually streamlined and long with beams that are very narrow.

Before an individual handles a canoe, it is advised that they ensure safety first. They are susceptible to risks like taking on water, getting blown off course, capsizing and reduced visibility. These risks are amplified by fact that the vessel sitting pretty low in the water. Safety equipment should thus be examined before commencing any journey.

Lastly, it is worth mentioning that as a paddler of the craft one is responsible for their safety as well as that of its passengers. In order to be visible to other water users a person is required to wear the recommended brightly colored clothing. Also, the clothing should be suitable for the conditions of the area. Each person on the vessel should be wearing a life jacket.
