About The People Who Live In Boca Raton

By Jony Mozen

Florida is the USA's Sunshine State. It's famous for the vibrant city of Miami, the beaches, the swampy Everglades and of course Disney World. The warm weather also means that people from all over the USA move here once they're retired and one of the great cities to consider if you're thinking of moving to Florida is Boca Raton.

Boca, as it's often called, is located on the east coast of the Florida Peninsula and lies about 42 miles to the north of Miami. It's located in Palm Beach County. The name, which translates as 'mouse's mouth', actually comes from old Spanish words that had nothing to do with rodents. The 'mouth' is an inlet that mariners named for its rocky bottom. Those rocks were known as 'ratones', which is the Spanish for 'mice' as well.

Back in the 1930s, only about 500 people lived in Boca. Nowadays around 85,000 people live in the nearly thirty square miles that form the city. This means that there is a population density of about 2,600 people per square mile. Between 2000 and 2010, the population grew by almost 12 percent.

Most of the residents earn within the middle to upper income levels and work in white-collar professions. In fact, the annual per capita income here is around 45,000 dollars. Only about 6 percent of residents make less than 10,000 dollars per year. In contrast, more than 12 percent make more than 200,000 dollars a year and some of the most expensive gated communities in the US are located in this Florida city. Notable residents include sports stars, rockers and actors. Even billionaire Donald Trump has a residence in Boca.

Most people who live in Boca are couples who are married. However, families are quite small, with the average size less than three people. There are fewer than 16,000 households that have children but the city has fantastic schools where these young ones can get an education. Parents can enroll their kids in one of several private schools or in the public schools such as the four high schools located here.

Boca is not only for young families. Almost a fifth of its residents are retired and live on pensions and other forms of retirement income. There are slightly more women than men of retirement age and retirees often live in retirement communities where they can do their own thing but still have access to assistance if they need it. They also have a good choice of hospitals, clinics and doctors.

The vast majority, in fact about 80 percent of the people speak English as first language. Most were born in other US states. Spanish is the first language of around 9 percent of the residents. Other significant linguistic communities include those who speak Portuguese, French or Italian at home. More than half the people are Christian and most of these attend the Catholic Church. About a quarter of Boca's residents belong to the city's substantial Jewish community and there is a small Muslim community too.

Generally, Boca is a safe place to live, with very few violent crimes. In fact, the quality of life here is high and there are many attractions and things to do within easy reach of the city. With its sunny and warm tropical climate, it's a paradise for lovers of the great outdoors and it's indeed a city for All Seasons.
