How Welcome Trump Supporters Are Today

By Ruth Phillips

During the last presidential campaign, people who liked Donald Trump were often afraid to say so. Few put Trump-Pence stickers on their car bumpers, and some who did had their cars vandalized. On the east coast, at least anywhere near a large city, people hesitated to put a sign in their yard. Today, things have changed a bit, but still many fail to welcome Trump supporters.

Conservative news outlets continue to report hostility toward those who think the current president is good for America. People wearing 'MAGA" hats have been attacked verbally and physically. Many call the comment line at the White House to express their support or 'like' posts on Facebook rather than express their views publicly.

Although conservatives outnumber liberals in America, they often feel sidelined without support in the mainstream media or from celebrities in Hollywood. Unfortunately conservatives tend to be quieter than progressives. They stay home, take care of their families, practice traditional values, and seek a quiet life. It's hard to get them aroused for any cause.

There is no doubt that a vocal minority can swing public perceptions. One example of this is the Black Lives Matter movement, which is based on false narratives. Although the Trump administration has done much for blacks - lowest unemployment among blacks on record, black men and women in high positions, genuine aid to poor countries like Haiti - it is constantly accused of racism. Most Americans support traditional marriage, but the same sex marriage movement has tremendous momentum.

Polls which are deliberately slanted to advance the progressive agenda get blazoned on front pages or TV news shows, but Trump's approval numbers continue to rise. However, this doesn't seem to matter to those who have the public forums. The views of college students or those employed in government agencies - hardly impartial by-standers - are accepted as 'mainstream'. It's little wonder that most conservatives limit their political interactions to online comments or phone calls to the White House comment line.

Few people support a curtailment of free speech, for instance, but college students accept censorship of ideas and 'designated zones' for expressing conservative views without a fuss. The teen-age frenzy against guns is not a viewpoint shared by most Americans, although it is a favorite hobbyhorse of liberals (many of whom have armed bodyguards or walled estates). In vain do experts and realists point out that armed guards in schools deter violence and save lives. 'Gun free zones' invite aggression.

A biased media is responsible for much of this hostility toward those who favor smaller government and more personal freedom. Public education and the liberal slant found on most college campuses shares the responsibility, too. However, the silence of moderates and conservatives has allowed these things to happen. Parents continue to pay for education that teaches youth lessons their parents would never condone. People who are afraid to speak let things go from bad to worse.

Fortunately, too, conservatives have woken up to the need - and the duty - to vote. Even with chicanery at the polls and illegal voting going unpunished, the Trump-Pence ticket won. It is vital that those who support our president and love our country vote in every election and carefully consider candidates for every local and national post.
