Some Things You Need To Know About Aircraft Turbine Oil

By Sharon Price

At this moment in time, either you are an aircraft owner, or one who is in charge of the maintenance of one or several. You are also a firm believer in having some kind of preventive maintenance system as a way of being practical and prudent in the maintenance of your machines. A good aircraft preventive maintenance system will need key components like aircraft turbine oil to make it work. Thus the proper choice of a good turbine oil will affect the overall viability of your entire maintenance system. If you do want to know some tips on getting the right one, then do read on in this article.

Having and keeping your aircraft airworthy will mainly depend on regular maintenance and high quality turbine oil. Currently the oils made specifically for gas turbine engines can be considered as being part of the high performance oils category. Popular brands for these high performance oils are Mobil and Aero Shell. Though these are the most known, it should be put into mind that other lesser known brands also exist that are just as good.

Propulsion is the main job of both aircraft and automotive engines, but the functional similarity ends there. Pistons are the primary movers for car engines, while turbines are the main components for plane engines. Thus both will need different kinds of oils. Turbines in aircraft engines are usually run by the build up of highly pressurized gas as fuel is burned.

An environment of high temperature, high speed and high pressure is usually the common occurrence for jet fuel combustion. As such one will need an oil that can also adapt to this kind of environment. The turbine oil must also have good anti wear and anti corrosion properties while maintaining good thermal and oxidation properties.

Once you do god down the road in choosing the oil for your needs, do make sure that whatever you are choosing is approved for the commercial operation that you are involved in. To be sure, always get one that flexible in terms of a wide variety of commercial applications. It also does not hurt to get one that has passed military specifications.

Should your budget permit and if you are also willing to spend a bit more, you can go for OEM or original equipment manufacturer oils. OEM means that the oils are made by the same engine manufacturer. Thus if you have a Toyota engine, you will also use Toyota oils and so on.

It is also good to compute for the long run when it comes to pricing. If you do regular servicing across several units, it may be more practical to buy in bulk. Just make sure that the dealer you have an eye on can also deliver to your own bulk storage facilities, so as to save time and headaches on your end.

In sum the foregoing article has given some considerations to think over before buying a certain turbine oil for your needs. Do also consider doing some research on dependability and reliability of the other brands in the market.
