The Worldwide Extravaganza Of The Argentine Tango Festival

By Frank Hayes

Theres no other hallmark that completely captures the Argentinean spirit and identity as with tango. This dance is totally synonymous with the place. It is an inescapable association. To top off, this cultural trapping has extended well beyond its area of origin and is currently being enjoyed in multiple locations the entire world over. But if youre looking to attend a quintessential celebration to honor it, there is still nothing to top off the Argentine Tango Festival.

Much uniquely, aside from being a social dance, it is also a musical genre. This spews forth the popular beat particularly noticeable with this waltz, that is, the two fourths and common time signatures. The orchestras repertoire is mainly composed of melodic instruments as composed to rhythmic. The bandoneon, a type of button accordion, is the most preeminent.

It is only recently that historians have delved into the history of the dance. Thats not totally to be wondered at since no one can really guess that it would go on to become a cultural phenomenon. Historians concur on the fact, however, that this developed in the eighteen eighties along the ports of Argentina, combining European, Gaucho, and African influences.

This smorgasbord of influences are still evinced and expressed in the modern movements of this dance. There is the athletic leap and the dramatic pause of an African style, as well as the static embrace of a European. There are two kind of embraces, the open in which the partners connect with an arms length, and closed, in which they are chest to chest.

Music is also quintessential to tango. Therefore, dancing appropriately to the motion and speed of sixteen or thirty beats is of utmost importance. The sensual walk is another trademark of this dance. The expression of passion, and the transmission of music between the pairs and their audience, are supposed to be the hallmarks of a good dancer.

There are many variants all throughout the world. For the two primary ones, however, there is Milonga, which is considerably more upbeat in tempo than the classic. The notes are also snappier and more accented. As a result, its more lighthearted and carefree and is usually performed with a smile. On the other hand, the Val is like a median point in that its not as fast as Italian Waltz but not as slow as the Viennese variant.

It goes without saying that every day is this dances day in Argentina. But if you want to be technical, lets say that the actual festivities start in May with the culmination of metropolitan championships. Later on, this transitions into Mundial de Tango, which is much ballyhooed as the worlds biggest spectacle and extravaganza for the genre.

La Festival, which stretches up to nine days, is composed of recitals, classes, shows, film screenings, book signings, and musical performances. Most importantly, perhaps, there is a nightly dancing of tangueros in the streets of Buenos Aires. The Mundial de Tango, in its turn, is the cynosure for those who deem themselves the best tanguero in the world.

For the Argentines, Tango is a way of life. So much, that in 2009, it was included in the Intangible Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO. Aside from all the corporeal boons, as with the physical exercise and social satisfaction, this is also a comprehensive expression of their culture and identity. It is totally a great thing to be known for the whole world over.
