Benefits Of Lap Band Surgery Houston Clients Should Know Of

By Kimberly Miller

Surgery is now widely accepted as an effective method of losing weight. There are several types of bariatric operations that are performed all over the world. Lap band surgery is among those that provide the most satisfactory results. Generally, people who sign up for these procedures are those that have attempted using other techniques (such as lifestyle modification) but have been unsuccessful. There are some important things on Lap band surgery Houston obese patients need to know.

Bariatric surgeries are also termed restrictive surgeries because of the underlying principle. The effects are achieved due to a reduction in the capacity of the stomach and subsequently a reduction in the amount of food eaten. Persons that have had the operation experience faster filling and early satiety. Most of the food that is eaten is used for the provision of energy with very little being stored in adipose tissues.

The doctor will have to take a medical history and examine you before they schedule you for the operation. This is focused on assessing your surgical risk. Your medical history will be taken and the doctor will also conduct a physical examination on you. Candidates that benefit the most are those whose body mass index is above 40. A lower value may be considered if one already has conditions caused by excessive weight such as diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea.

During the banding procedure, a special silicon band is placed onto the stomach to compress it. The effect of this is a significant reduction in the size of stomach. On average, the resultant capacity is about one ounce. An instrument known as a laparoscope is usually used for this purpose. Its various components are inserted into the abdominal cavity through three small incisions. Images from the abdomen are projected onto a screen to guide the surgeon.

Although the banding can also be done through an open surgical approach, the laparoscopic technique is more preferred. One of the main reasons as to why this is the case is the fact that the incision used for the open procedure is larger, more prone to infections and associated with unsightly scars. The laparoscopic approach results in quicker recovery and patients can resume their regular routines within 24 to 48 hours.

The main advantage that lap banding has over other types of bariatric surgeries is the fact that it is not a permanent procedure. Adjustments can easily be made when complications set in or the band can be removed from the stomach altogether. The presence of a plastic tubing connected to the band makes this possible. Filling the tube with saline increases the squeeze and reduces the stomach size further and withdrawing the saline increases the size.

In general, this procedure, is considered safe. This does not mean that there are not potential complications. During the operation, excessive bleeding and injury to other structures may occur. Fortunately, the use of laparoscopy has markedly reduced this risk. Other complications that may be encountered are nausea and vomiting and these mainly result due to excessive pressure by the silicone band. Reducing this pressure reduces symptom severity.

This surgery is often conducted as a day case. The meaning of this is that a patient will be released home on the same day that they are operated except in cases where complications are encountered. The diet for the first two weeks should be light to allow the digestive tract to make adjustments. You will notice signs of weight loss within weeks and after about six months one may lose as much as 50% of their original weight.
