He originally called it cognitive therapy. It placed an emphasis on thinking. It was based on thought and behavior and thus, the name cognitive behavioral therapy came into being. A large number of scientific testing has proved the validity of this type of therapy.

According to Beck the thought patterns start in childhood and eventually become automatic. A thought becomes an incorrect belief and is a dysfunctional assumption that may be harmful if negative. The person may grow up to believe he cannot do well in school because a teacher inadvertently made a statement causing him to feel inferior.

Dr. Beck believes the negative thought patterns are inculcated during childhood. Eventually they become automatic thinking. For example, a child may think he is not able to do well in academic work. A teacher may have said something that made him believe that. This incorrect belief caused him to feel incompetent.
